“The exterior creates such a powerful impression of weightiness and strength that the lightness of the interior comes as a surprise. A pitched roof of polished fir beams floats above the sanctuary, forming a space of unexpected exuberance and grace. The gap between the roof and the walls is covered with glass tiles, through which light washes into the sanctuary below…And yet the Cistercian Abbey Church is not a nostalgic period piece. The pitched roof is attached to the stone walls by steel beams and tensile cables. The side walls sit upon massive concrete columns that are finished in spare industrial style. And whenever possible, the architects have exposed the church’s structure so that there can be no doubt that it is a modern building.”
