TEXAS FINE ARTS ASSOCIATION

AUSTIN, TEXAS | 6,000 SQFT | COMPLETED IN 1998

In its 14-year history this building has been a general store, theater, and retail space prior to becoming a center for contemporary art.  Each demolition left behind remnants of the place’s history: a limestone rubble wall from 1860, ornate plaster paintings and steel trusses from the early 1900s, and concrete columns and steel frames from the late 1950s.  In its reincarnation as gallery space, the building’s different lives are exposed and celebrated.  The juxtaposition of built history and contemporary art creates a dynamic space in the heart of downtown Austin.

“The Jones Center’s slyly exposed structure, high metal ceilings, and post-industrial simplicity serve as the perfect backdrop for the 89-year-old organization’s changing contemporary, mostly cutting-edge exhibition schedule.”
