The Zion Lutheran Recreation Outreach Center is situated on a prominent street corner on the Zion Lutheran Church and School campus. The immediate neighborhood is multifamily on one street and single family on the other. This addition addresses the street as an old neighbor with a new face, with large windows facing that street corner that allows views inside a gymnasium full of activity. Within the gym, light enters through clerestory windows and a light-diffusing skylight above the wood sports floor. Most sunny days, this daylighting is all that’s needed. An Epic acoustic roof deck keeps reverberation in check, providing a large gathering area appropriate for a wide range of school and community activities. Spacious locker rooms and coach offices complete the program, with a glass-enclosed entry lobby that is nestled under grand live oak trees. The Recreation Outreach Center was sited to preserve these old trees and to create an outdoor courtyard between it and the existing school building. The remaining site around the is planted with non-mow, non-irrigated wildflowers and native materials to minimize water use and regular maintenance.
